P0440 Trouble Code Diagnosis and Repair

Diagnosing a P0440 trouble code in a '02 Chevrolet Blazer.

This 2002 Blazer service engine soon light came on indicating the computer had stored an onboard diagnostic 2 (OBDII) trouble code.

The OBD2 connector in the Blazer is shown here next to the parking brake pedal – the tester plugs in, then the key is turned to on (not start) and the reader does its job.

Two codes were stored: both P0440.  The reader was used to clear the trouble codes, turning off the service engine soon light.  A quick check online of this trouble code for this vehicle revealed that the code meant an evaporative emission control system malfunction. A little further reading on the subject showed that the most common cause is a loose gas cap.  Some people call this the “loose gas cap” trouble code.

This locking gas cap is starting to wear out and not locking properly.  This time it simply lifted off with no effort! Tightening the gas cap solved this problem. ~Chuck
